mierne vyvýšený priestor pod odkvapom strechy pozdĺž uličnej a dvorovej strany domu. Podstenie vytváralo komunikačné prepojenie obytnej časti domu s dvorom, ulicou, hospodárskou časťou aj s povalou. Využívalo sa aj pri niektorých prácach žien i mužov, na sušenie bielizne, strukovín, ovocia, konope a kukurice. Bolo obľúbeným miestom krátkeho odpočinku, aj nedeľného spoločenského posedenia. V dispozičnom a funkčnom rozvoji tradičných obydlí sa podstenia od prelomu 19. a 20. storočia premieňali na uzavreté priestory – gánok a verandu.
