svätec, patrón pastierov. Podľa legendy diakon sirmijského biskupa Ireneja. Tri dni po biskupovom úmrtí (v roku 304) bol Demeter odsúdený na smrť Jeho kult sa na Slovensku rozšíril po príchode pastierskeho obyvateľstva pri kolonizácii na valaskom práve. V tradičnej kultúre sa s týmto dňom viazali pastierske alebo valaské hody – mitrovanie. Bača a valasi chodili po dedine vo sviatočných šatách, v kostole obetovali syr a oštiepky. Po vyúčtovaní s majiteľmi oviec (Už je po Mitre, už valachom svitne) sa konala spoločná hostina. Obyčaj mitrovania sa v pastierskych oblastiach uchoval do polovice 20. storočia, miestami (Lendak) aj dlhšie.
