The programme, which has been in place continuously since 1959, recognises the merits of individuals awarded the Master of Folk Art Production for their artistic contributions and exceptional achievements in developing specific production processes in folk art and traditional crafts.
Over the years, ÚĽUV has created a system that remains functional today. It is based on close collaboration between experts—artists, marketers, and ethnographers—as well as producers to jointly improve the quality in the field. Each year, professional staff prepare or modify the nominations for the Master of Folk Art Production title, submitting them as an expert text and a selection of works by the nominated producer to an expert committee composed of scientists and artists with deep knowledge of the subject.
The Master of Folk Art Production title remains highly relevant in Slovak society and is respected by experts, including scientists, artists, and designers. This title highlights individuals among producers who stand out for the quality of their work, preserve original materials and techniques, and further develop them. A key condition is also that these individuals pass on their skills and knowledge to future generations.
The title is a commitment for the awardees, as its symbolic value is significant in Slovakia. As a result, most continue their work into old age, sharing their knowledge with future generations of producers through courses, expert and popular publications, lectures, craft demonstrations, exhibitions, and other activities.
